Hello everyone, I hope you had a great summer vacation. I hope some of you went abroad and had a chance to speak and learn some English. I would like to take this opportunity to list three tips that can be useful for you to improve your English, besides coming to PLC of course.

  • By all means, whenever you have a chance to speak English to someone, take it. Talk to your teachers at school or here at PLC. Don’t be shy or worried about making mistakes or not being understood. Teachers will be glad to listen and speak back to you. Ask them personal questions about their country, interests, Japanese food or anything. People, and when I say people I’m talking about teachers also, love to talk about themselves. So please ask away!
Also, if you see a tourist looking at a map or looking confused, ask them if they need any help. You never know, you may make a contact or friend for life. So take those chances to speak!
  • Another tip I recommend is to carry around a little vocabulary book and pen. Whenever you hear a new word that you want to know the meaning write it down in the book. You can look up the meaning later or ask someone the meaning. You don’t need to do this with every word you hear, just words that make you say to yourself, “I wonder what that means”. Maybe play a game with yourself, count your words at the end of the week or month and try to get more the next time. Maybe play with a friend and see who gets the most words. You can help each other with vocabulary or trade words and meanings. Try it!
  • Another tip I feel could be quite helpful is using You tube. There are so many topics to choose from. Want to learn how to make a good hamburger you can get a cooking lesson in English. Want to learn how to play a song on the guitar you can get a music lesson in English. Pick a topic, choose a video and have your own private English lesson.

Those are just three tips to help improve your English. I hope you try them and please give some feedback if you do. Until next time, happy learning!
