何のために学ぶのか？

忙しい毎日の中で見失いがちな「英語を学ぶ目的」を思い出してもらうため、プロスでは様々な機会を提供しています。

先月、カリフォルニアから15才のShawくんとMayaさんがスペシャルゲストとして来校し、生徒と交流してくれました。生徒たちには英語を学ぶ意義を実感する一日になったようです。イベントの様子はこちら【前編 / 後編】

「どのような教育を受けて完璧なバイリンガルに育ったか」「日米の文化の違いをどのように感じているのか」インタビューの骨子を和英でギュッとまとめてみました。

スペシャルインタビュー【前編】

8月10日、カリフォルニアからスペシャルゲストが来校してくれました。彼らへのインタビューは驚きと興奮の連続でした。それが冷めやらぬままこの記事を書いています。

スペシャルゲストは15才の男女の双子、ShawくんとMayaさん。二人のお母さんは30年も前にプロスランゲージセンターを卒業した聡子Siegelさん。アメリカ人のお父さんJasonさんと４人でロサンゼルス郊外のアップランドという街で暮らしています。

彼らのプロフィールを読んだ時には「もし気難しいティーンエイジャーだったら？」と多少気をもんでいたのですが、要らぬ心配でした。堂々と自分の考えを話す姿はとても15才とは思えず、終始圧倒されました。また、USJを楽しんだ話を聞かせてくれたり、好きな日本の食べ物は“寿司、カレー、ラーメン”だと教えてくれたりした時のあどけない一面も見せてくれました。

インタビューでは、最初に彼らがバイリンガルに育った背景についてお話を伺いました。

生まれた時からお父さんとは英語で、お母さんとは日本語で会話し、２つの言語にドップリ浸かって成長。「幼稚園に行くまでは70％が日本語、30％が英語の生活だった」とShaw君。「幼稚園に通い始めた頃は、先生や友達が言うことが全くわからなかった。でも、いつもお母さんが『あなたたちはすごいのよ。他の子は英語しかできないでしょ。あなたたちは2つの言葉を話せるんだから！』と励ましてくれた。だから大丈夫だった。」とMayaさん。

小学校3年生になった時には、二人ともクラスでトップ10％しか通えない「特進クラス」に選ばれて特別な教育を受けることができるようになったそうです。

『あなたはすばらしい。絶対大丈夫。』というお母さんの魔法の言葉のおかげですね。

Special Interview / Part 1 (English Ver.)

We welcomed some special guests from California on August 10. The interview with them was full of surprise and excitement. I’m writing this article with lingering feelings of those.

Our special guests were 15-year-old twins named Shaw and Maya. Their mom, Satoko Siegel, is an alumni of our school, who graduated from PROS 30 years ago. The twins live with their mom and dad, Jason, in Upland which is located on the eastern outskirts of Los Angeles.

Honestly, when I was reading their profile, I was a little anxious thinking, “What if they are mood-swinging teenagers?”, but it was in vain. I was overwhelmed by their presence and their attitude. They spoke steadily and confidently. They didn’t look like 15 year olds. That being said, they entertained me with a story about how much fun they had at Universal Studios Japan, and when they told me about their favorite Japanese food, sushi, curry, ramen, they exhibited the angelic face of boys and girls.

I started the interview by asking about their background of being raised bilingual.

They were brought up fully immersed in two languages since their birth. They spoke with their dad in English and with their mom in Japanese. ‘’Before kindergarten, seventy percent of our communication was done in Japanese and thirty percent in English.’’ says Shaw. Maya says, ‘’When we started going to kindergarten, we had no clue what teachers and other kids were saying, but mom always encouraged us. She said, ‘You are fine and great. Other kids can speak only one language, but you can speak TWO!’. So we were fine.’’

When they reached the third grade, both of them were among the top ten percent of students to join the ‘Special Advanced Class’.

Thanks to the power of mom’s magical words, ‘’You are fine and great’’ !
